A friend rang this week inviting me to join her Tai Chi class.  I thought this would be ideal for me now, I have recovered from my cancers, and the onslaught of all the different tests and treatments over the last three years.

I commenced my first class on Wednesday morning.  After introductions to the teacher and the other women in the group, we commenced with warm ups, apparently this helps to get the blood circulating around the body.

After our warm ups, we then commenced a series of slow flowing movements.
We were reminded to focus on our dan-tien.  This is the area three fingers width down below your navel.  This is also known as the bodies centre of gravity.  When you focus on your dan-tien it will help you to relax and centre yourself. The main element of Tai Chi is the breathing.  You need to coordinate your breathing with each movement.

Now, these movements were not easy for me as I found my arms were still weak and my balance was mmm! let me say not good.  I was so busy concentrating on the teacher and the rest of the ladies around me, that I nearly fell over a few times from my bad balance and also, my lack of concentration.  However, I made up when we put all these movements together with music.  It was an amazing experience.  I know I wasn’t brilliant with my movements and I had to remind myself to be patient as this was my first day.

After, those flowing movements with music, we mediated for around seven minutes.  After mediation we walked around waking our bodies up with gentle stretches.  I was very impressed and will be back to enjoy another class next week.

I decided to browse the web after I came home from my class.  I wanted to find out more on Tai Chi and its benefits.  I was surprised to find, there was so many benefits that can help us all.  For me, I can improve my balance and posture, strengthen my immune and digestive system.  This gentle exercise harmonizes the mind, body and spirit and promotes physical and mental well being.
